On
March 25, 2007, Thompson Springs Baptist Church
celebrated its 75th Anniversary. The church began
in 1932 in the hearts of several of its charter members,
when it became apparent to them that God's will was for
a new Baptist church to be established to serve the
community of Thompson Springs. Under the divine
guidance of the Holy Spirit, the small congregation met
in a log home on Bates Pike for about two years with
William H. Coffee serving as pastor.
On December 16,
1933, work began on the present church sanctuary on land donated by
T. Cook and Lela Thompson. Most of the common labor was
donated by members and friends of the church. Ten months
later, the church was completed near the Thompson Farm Spring from
which it received its name. On Sunday, October 14, 1934 the
structure was dedicated.
During
the years of Christian service that has followed, the church has
increased its floor space to four times that of the original. A vestibule was added, and a basement was hand dug. Restrooms
were then added. A unit was built for Sunday School rooms and
a choir loft. Years later another addition was built which
added additional Sunday School rooms and a fellowship hall. In
recent years the present auditorium was remodeled, a baptistery
installed, and a steeple added.
On
March 23, 2008, ground was broken
on a new church sanctuary. It will cover 4,590 square feet in total
and seat an estimated 263 people.
Through the years of progress, both
spiritual and physical, many lives have been touched and changed.
We anticipate even greater blessings to follow, until our blessed
Redeemer sounds the trumpet. AMEN!
