After brief pastorates at Marris Chapel Baptist Church in Bogata, Texas, Grange Hall Baptist Church in Marshall, Texas and Southside Baptist Church in Henderson, Texas, he became widely known as the pastor of Miller Road Baptist Church in Garland, Texas. Through his leadership and zealous soul winning, Miller Road reached a membership of four thousand in seven years.

In 1959 Dr. Hyles became the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Hammond, Indiana. He would continue to serve as pastor till his death in February, 2001. For many years, the church has been acclaimed to have the "World's Largest Sunday School,” with attendances on big days topping twenty-five thousand.

In 1972, he founded Hyles-Anderson College. Dr. Hyles led in the training of over 1,000 pastors and missionaries currently serving in the United States and on foreign fields.  The First Baptist Church also owns and operates a rescue mission and cemetery, both of which along with the schools, are located within 20 miles of the church.

Dr. Hyles was a frequent cospeaker with  Dr. John R. Rice at Sword of the Lord Conferences all across the nation. Dr. Rice called him “a tornado of zeal,” with “a unique anointing from God.”

Dr. Hyles authored 49 books and pamphlets and many of his sermons are available on audio and video tape.  He preached in virtually every state of the Union and in many foreign countries.  And he was without question, one of the twentieth century’s most influential voices in fundamentalism.
